Google Latitude For iPhone/iPod Touch Out
It’s always so nice when Google and Apple work together instead of fighting. Today Google released Google Latitude for the iPhone and iPod touch. In true Google fashion they’ve made it a browser-based app; Latitude launches in Safari.
In a nutshell, Google Latitude allows your friends to see exactly where you are at any given time and, if they have Google Latitude enabled, vice versa. If you get creeped out at the idea of all of your friends and loved ones knowing your position every hour of every day, don’t fret. Latitude has privacy settings, which allow you to decide how your location is shared, when it’s shared, and with whom it is shared.
Also, since the iPhone supports W3C Geolocation API, Google’s been able to include some search and direction functions into the app. You can press the blue dot and it will take you to your location on the map. From there, you can plug in directions and figure out how to get from where you are, to where you need to be.
All you have to do to test out Latitude is type, “google.com/latitude” into your iPhone browser. Since there’s no real way for apps to run in the background on the iPhone, Latitude won’t be able to give constant location updates for iPhone users like it does for other mobile users.
